Chris and Carrie,

GOOD LUCK at Superweek. I am posting an article from this week's paper that I thought you'd find interesting. It's long but has to do with biking and sponsors. Hope to see you soon!

Tour of Missouri accelerates to $2 million in sponsorships
St. Louis Business Journal - July 20, 2007
by Rick Desloge

Edward Jones will have booths at every stop on the Tour of Missouri bicycle race, hoping to leverage its $100,000-plus sponsorship.

"It's an opportunity to make cycling fans and investors better acquainted," said Mark Eckert, who oversees paid media for Edward Jones, which has 525 branch offices in the state.

Another founding sponsor, Build-A-Bear Workshop, is creating a "Best Young Rider" jersey to be awarded to the youngest daily winner of the inaugural, six-stage, 600-mile race around the state. Next month Build-A-Bear will start selling Teddy Bear-size replicas of the jerseys from its 11 stores in Missouri.

Those two businesses along with Anheuser-Busch, O'Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T, Monsanto, Drury Inns and Hotels, Mercy Health Plans, and the Surdyke Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership in Festus and Gail's Harley-Davidson in Kansas City have pushed paid sponsorships to nearly $2 million, said Mark Gorski, director of corporate sponsorships for the event.

Some, such as Anheuser-Busch's Michelob brand beer, purchased rights to award "King of the Mountain" jerseys to winners among the cycling elite expected to race in the event, Gorski said. Monsanto purchased rights to the "feed zone," the area where riders get their lunch.

The sponsors paid between $50,000 to $250,000 to be inaugural underwriters. They will be setting up VIP tents, most of them fully catered, at locations along the race. The event starts Sept. 11 and ends five days later in St. Louis, with stops in between in Clinton, Springfield, Branson, Lebanon, Columbia, Jefferson City and St. Charles. It's attracted some 120 world-class riders who will be competing for $115,000 in prize money.

The biggest sponsor is the state of Missouri, which put $1 million toward the cycling race from the Missouri Tourism Commission. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who chairs the commission, called the outlay an investment.

"This is the best opportunity to brand Missouri to a world audience -- better than the World Series because this is six days all in Missouri. It will be covered by VS. Network, the same channel that covers the Tour de France," Kinder said. "You may not be a cycling buff, but they are everywhere. They have disposable income; they will come to Missouri and follow this race."

The only thing lacking for Tour of Missouri is a title sponsor, he said. "We're still hoping to get one for $500,000."

That's not unheard of, according to tour organizers. The Tour of Georgia -- a model for the Tour of Missouri -- landed AT&T as a $500,000 corporate sponsor two weeks before this year's race, said Chris Aronhalt, managing partner with Medalist Sports of Tyrone, Ga. His company managed the Tour of Georgia and the Tour of California bicycle races and was hired to run the Missouri race as well.

Kinder estimated Tour of Missouri will draw about 500,000 people.
